Isabela is a municipality of Puerto Rico located in the northwestern region of the island, north of San Sebastián; west of Quebradillas; and east of Aguadilla and Moca. Isabela is spread over 13 wards and Isabela Pueblo.
The Taíno chief Mabodamaca ruled the region of the 'Guajataca' (northeastern region) where a village was founded as San Antonio de la Tuna around 1725. In 1818, the village obtained permission from the Governor to transfer the village to a new location closer to the coast. The new town would be named Isabela in honor of Queen Isabella of Castile, Spain. The Governor approved the transfer request and a new town (Isabela) was founded the following year on May 21, 1819.
